 Gopher, Chickens and the Cat
« Thread Started on Dec 3, 2003, 9:40am »

So today’s project is the gopher inside the chicken coop.
Went out just to check on them, the suns not up yet, so can’t do much outside yet.
6:30 here.

The darned thing is digging under the brick floor by the automatic water bowl.
Guess I’ll first try tossing a cat in there for a while, she if Stella can get it. ;D
If that doesn’t work, it’s on the plan B.

What up for your morning and where’s my coffee?

Kris

Around here morning starts at about 0445 when the cat asks out. :P

I start moving about 0615 ... first order of business .... let in cat. :'( The temperature was 0F this morning and his comment was "WOW" when he came in for breakfast.

Then the day starts in ernest. Coffee on, feed the cat, build the fire, splt the wood, haul the water, check the trailer.

Any kind of luck and were off to Orlando in two weeks. I have to teach the cat to catch armadillos. ;D

;DLooks like about 40 days so far Frank. Plans are still a bit flexible but I kinda hope the worst of winter will be over before we have to head north again.

We are looking for some solar panels on this trip as well. From what I've seen on the web, I guess that means a few days in Miami. ::)

Do you know anything about inter-tying into an existing power grid? I want to get solar panels and tie them in to the electric utility here. Eventually will get off the grid entirely, but one step at a time. 8-)

I don't have chickens or a cat but I do have gophers. Anybody got any other suggestions on how to persuade the critters to move elsewhere? I'd like to put in a garden, but not for the gophers' benefit! ;D

:)Quite a project to intertie to the grid. Expect to spned $$$$ in the thousands. :-[

The best way to start out is to try a stand alone system of say, a few lights and maybe a TV. That way you can learn if this alternative energy stuff is for you.

I didn't get the solar panels on that trip. I guess next year. Now, I'm stalking a Air-X ;D 13 pound 400 watt windcharger. That may be a better fit for me. Sunshine has not been co operating lately.

I'm looking into windmills myself, to run the well pump at least. Seems for the cost, it might be a better deal.
Everyday at 3 pm the wind kicks in, it's like clock work.
There are 3 working windmills in this area, seems like if they work for others ....

Gophers are sneeky little critters, but cats are sneekyer.
(Is sneekyer a word?)
Gopher traps work, bait them with dandilion leaves.
But I HATE pulling up traps with a mangled gopher on the end, YUCK!!

What about those gopher repellers that you stick into the ground and they make some kind of noise? Anybody got the skinny on those?

The round ones where you have to pull the little ring and the handle flys off and you chuck 'em in the hole and stand back work well ;D

What do you folks call a gopher? Here we have Richardson's Ground Squirrel, Pocket Gophers and Stripers. Each has it's own control method.

The one universal gopher getter is a badger. The down side is their temperment makes the Tasmanian devil look like a Sunday School teacher. :o

I have a funny feeling that the only true control method is going to get messy!! :P
