Anybody have tick problems? The place where we may be moving has 'em. Any other means of protection other than checking the animals (and ourselves) before coming inside?

They say Guinea Fowl eat them ... however I was jumped by one as a kid and still have scars. I think I'd rather have ticks! ;D

Other then that, flea & tick collers do work ... its just hard to find one that goes with your wardrobe. :D

The cat however has no such problem, except he can neatly remove the ticks and leave them on the couch for the next unsuspecting person. :P

Chickens will eat them also, and their not so scary as guinea fowl.
Your right Guffy, those things are big. Geese scary me to. I'm an adult and still climb tree's if a goose hisses at me.
We camp where there's ticks and we use Advantage on the dogs, never had a tick. As for us, well, just luck has kept them off us.

There must be something ticks don't like, maybe rosemary or something smelly.
I'll read up on it.

Only thing that come to mind is grass fires!! ;)

We have deer and bear all over the place so the ticks spred faster then you could hope to spray for them .. and were not much on chemical solutions .. so .. I guess we just put up with it.

Thanks for the help! I'll most likely be using the collars first. When I get chickens though, those ticks better watch out...

I agree with the chicken vote...we have little problem with ground insects with a flock of free range chickens varying between 20- 40 at a time picking away out there... ;)

Chickens, yes! Ticks = tasty eggs!

Throw any roosters with bad attitudes in the pot. I still have a scar close to my eye from one of those buzzards spurring me when I was three.

Check the cdc.gov website and do a search on Lyme disease. It shows what areas of the country have the species of tick that causes Lyme. A friend of mine has it. The bulls eye rash doesn't show up in all cases. So, best not to let them bite in the first place. Thankfully, they're slow about getting around to biting.

I wear tall boots, long leggings, a leather "cowboy" hat, long sleeves year round. They're usually easy to see, though the pinhead sized nymphs can be hard to spot.

Once it bites, the quicker removed the better. Grasp firmly with tweezers and pull straight out. Do not apply alcohol, vasoline, smoldering match, etc. Doing that will just make it "throw up" the spirochetes that cause the disease. :P

One was crawling around on my shirt yesterday, nasty beastie.
