 Spring fever
« Thread Started on Feb 24, 2004, 12:04pm »

I got it bad. Yesterday it was sunny and about 65.
Pulled weeds in the flower patch, getting ready to plant my Zinna's. The husband loves those and sunflowers.
Walked around the garden area with that look in my eye, you know the one, kinda starry eyed and dreamy.
Today it's raining just enought to be anoying!!

Not much longer folks!!

I'm in the same boat Kris...although I'm looking at another two months or more.
Spending time in the nurseries doesn't make it easier either, lol.
I'm looking forward to starting seeds inside and building some raised beds as soon as ground thaws.
It's really nice here now, but they say the cold is coming back. Could you send some of that California sunshine this way? ;D

Hi Bre and Guffy,
I have a feeling this is going to be a good gardening year!
I can’t do any REAL gardening till May myself.
No snow here, but unpredictable weather.
Today it’s stormy, howling winds, raining sideways, thunder, scary.
Not use to storms like this, (I’m typing from under the kitchen table) ;)
The cats are under the bed, the dogs won’t go outside and the chicken are sitting under their “porch”.
Real weather scares use Cali types, a bunch of wimps we are, I admit it. ::)

I did start some pansy’s in egg cartons a week or so ago.
Left them outside last night because the no frost in site, now their swimming!!

This year’s new stuff …..

Yellow perfection tomato
Golden rod Bean
Opal purple basil
Moon & Stars watermelon
Honey pink melon
Amish Pie squash
Jenny Lund melon
And Kidney beans

What’s going in your garden for the first time this year?

Hope all is well,

Kris

lol ...I love thunderstorms, I look forward to them in the summer. Only problem is we get wicked hail storms with them usually. :(
Your garden sounds like it is going to be fantastic, Kris. ;D
This year pretty much everything I'm trying is new. All I grew last year (my first garden) was lettuce, spinach, radishes, swiss chard, carrots, bush beans, strawberries, tomatoes, rhubarb and raspberries.
This year I'm gonna try some Brussel's sprouts, beets, peppers, eggplants, snow peas, melons and maybe some squash. I'm also looking at trying out some blueberries, gooseberries, and maybe some fruit trees, we'll have to see what I have room for. Pretty much trying out the usual first to see how I do with that.

For a first time garden it sounds like you did very well.
Melon’s are one of our favorite thing to grow, expensive to buy here, don’t know why.
If your growing zucchini, be sure to have plenty of recipes on hand ;D
Blueberries sound wonderful also, I’m jealous, way to HOT here to grow them.

We’ll have to keep the garden updates going, so we can encourage each other!!

Kris, I'm all about sharing garden updates I'm sure I'll have tons of questions about everything.
It might be too cold to grow blueberries here, lol, but I'm going to try anyway. Just need the right protection.
Have you started planting anything yet? Or do you plant year round? I'll probably be starting seeds inside within the next two weeks.

Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, pea’s, potatoes and spinach were planted in January.
Seems that way they really take off when the weather warms up. This year we got a few cold spells where the temps dipped into the 20’s. Didn’t seem to hurt anything except the citrus trees.
Cole crops can be planted here anytime between November and March here.
Would like to get the onions in the ground this weekend, maybe some more taters also.
Didn’t get enough potatoes last year, the ones from the store weren’t very good.

I wasn’t paying any attention to the date, and your right, it’s almost time to start seeds indoors!!
As usual, everything is started in egg cartons or paper cups. Little growing things all over the house.
This is a good time of year isn’t it. :)
