Sorry, I hit enter before I asked the question.

I don't know much about this. In the old days it was possible to get land by building a house and working the land for x amount of years, or something like this.

Is this still possible?

What is the best way to get land, 5-20 acres, cheaply?

What you refer to is the "Homesteading Act". Unfortunately...that program is no longer available...and hasn't been for quite some time.

Others may have differing opinions on this...but first, you really have to hunt for it. Second...buy unimproved land. Land that needs cleared, has no well etc. Third...buy land that no one else wants.
I recently read an article about a couple that bought 9 acres that surrounded an old abandoned mine...nobody wanted this land so it was cheap enough for them to afford. With hard work and a lot of prayers, they've transformed their little piece of land into quite a little ranch... ;D

I am in the Idaho Falls area. I would be interested in any area with 25 miles of Idaho Falls. 10 would be nicer. Tall order, I know.
