Medical subjects
Post by wildflower on Dec 30, 2003, 9:44pm

Hi Gang,

I currently teach Medical Assisting and would be happy to help with questions that deal with medical subjects, anatomy and physiology, and such. I also have an extensive library dealing with alternative medicine and would happy to help with questions dealing in those subjects also.

Welcome wildflower!

I love herbs. I mainly use them prior to and right after childbirth.

With my 5th I didn't need any uterine tonic herbs after delivery, but with my latest one, my 6th, I took some shepherd's purse and cayenne postpartum. It seemed to help.

I took alfalfa, yellow dock, dandelion & nettle tea for the liver and an endurance boost with pregnancy #5.

Glad you're with us!

Ummm...huh?

Do you guys get the Herbal Healer catalog? I contacted them after seeing their ad for years in Backwoods Home magazine...but honestly...I don't know much about herbs and homeopathic medicines...I'm way behind the curve... :-/

I have an Encyclopedia of Herbs, the author's last name is Cavalier, a gift from my dad a few years ago and my first "herb" book, if you don't count my Audobon Mushroom guide. I like the book because it has so many good photos and explanations. So you can see, I'm learning all the time, too.

My late grandma is responsible for my interest in herbs and forest chanterelles, because she taught my mother, who taught me when I was a kid. There were 14 children in my grandma's family (according to my mother, one was stillborn). They were all born in the backwoods. Travel was difficult. They lived outside St. Maries, and there wasn't a road to St. Maries until the 20s. There was the train and the St. Joe River. So, it was the natural thing, to seek medicines from nature, rather than rely on a drugstore.

I learned about pregnancy herbs through my midwife 12 years ago. I'm so thankful she taught me about them.

In answer to your question about the Herbal Healer, Frank, yes, actually I am working my way through Dr. McCain's herbology course. I have also study iridology some as well as some of the other alternative therapies. I would love to be able to quit work and go to school full time to learn more about herbs and other alternative therapies but alas, that wouldn't keep the bills paid and I haven't come up with the winning combo for the powerball yet!! LOL So I have to work it into the daily routine. Oh well, maybe one of these days. ;)

Wildflower, I've been wondering. Do you do liver cleanses? If you have a recipe, post it here! As soon as I'm done nursing, I'm going to do one. It's been a long time. I have a recipe for a cleanse using lemon juice but I've been overloaded with citrus lately. (Makes me rashy.)

This question's for my herb journal. What are good and safe worm expellers? My encyclopedia mentions pomegranate rind but cautions about toxicity. Mexican natives have been using cayenne forever, but I hear it just makes the critters let go for awhile, but they aren't expelled. (Gross, I know. :P)

Oh my gosh!! Star I apologize for not getting back to you on this!! I'm truly not ignoring you!! I usually only have a few minutes when I get on and I didn't see your question!! I'll look this up and get back to you with an answer. (My daughter is here this weekend for a visit, am only on for a few minutes right now.) I haven't done a liver cleanse in a long time (so it probably is a good time for one! ;D ) so I want to look it up to be sure I get it to you correctly.

As far as worms, there are some herbs that I have heard of that work well, the first one that comes to mind is black walnut hull. I'll see if I can find that recipe also.

Of course, as I'm sure you know, it is important for the bowels to be working correctly before any cleansing is done. You need to be having at the very least one BM per day, (actually you should have one for each big meal you consume). Otherwise all that stuff just sits there, becomes toxic, and you start to absorb those toxins, which can lead to the backup in your liver. It never ceases to amaze me how western medicine can separate out the different parts of the body and think they can be treated separately when the body is a wonderous machine that is so intertwined one part can not function without influencing another part.

I'll be back!! 8-)

I'm sooo ignored! <sniff!> Just kidding. ;) It's pretty mellow here, as you can tell.

Black walnut, yes, I forgot that one, and wormwood. Thank you, Wildflower!

Very good point, ITA re: western medicine.
